A kilobit is a thousand bits in data transfer. It's used to calculate how much data is transported per second. Kilobits per second is abbreviated as kb/s, Kbps, or kbps (as opposed to Kilobytes per second, which is abbreviated as KBps). Take notice of the capitalization. Bits are generally represented by the lowercase b, while bytes are represented by the capital B.
